NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV, and Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch announced today that Sweden will host a workshop designed to discuss the legal frameworks needed for the adoption of innovative nuclear technologies and applications.

Scheduled to take place in 2025, the workshop will bring together technical and policy experts from both government and the private sector to discuss the unique legal challenges generated by the development of small modular, transportable, marine and Generation IV reactors. These multi-sectoral challenges relate to areas such as licensing, nuclear liability, transportation, factory manufacturing, environmental reviews, public participation, international co-operation and maritime applications of nuclear energy.

The announcement was made during Roadmaps to New Nuclear, a government-industry conference co-organised by the NEA and the Ministry for Climate and Enterprise of Sweden on 19-20 September 2024.
